The Georgia Viaduct, a bridge overpass connecting downtown Vancouver to Strathcona and East Vancouver, was first built between 1913 and 1915. A new Viaduct was built in 1972, initially envisioned as part of an extensive freeway system for Vancouver, which met resistance from nearby communities in the early 1970s. Today, the future of the Viaduct is under discussion, with proposed ideas for its removal, as part of a re-imagining of its surrounding areas.
